Dolls Based on Books & Plays

Base: Apitchou

Edgar from King Lear, AKA my teenage Shakespearean crush. I'm not sure why I had a crush on a fictional obscure medieval character, except to say that I first read Lear as an impressionable, hormonal adolescent, and the tender way Edgar treated his blind, suicidal father and the heroic manner in which he brought down the wrath upon his evil brother made my heart a bit fluttery.

I've mentioned that I'm a dork on this website already, right?

The branchy staff is from Edgar's alter ego, Tom Bedlam. The two leaves represent Edgar and his father. (Ooooo! Symbolism!) The sword is for the aforementioned vengeance wreaking. The outfit? Completely made up by me, which disturbs my need to be historically accurate. Especially when the result is somewhat clownlike. But YOU try finding clothing references for Britain's late Iron Age. It's impossible!

Base: The Cyberlair

Hamlet for the 21st century, wondering if he should take forensic archaeology at the University of Aalborg next semester.

Base: Unknown Artist

This was my first doll to fall prey to the .gif monster. He seemed to have a taste for Hamlet's hair, and when he was finished munching on the prince's head, it looked like Hammy had a bad case of intermittent male pattern baldness. Poor guy. Check out Laertes' smirk . . . . "C'mon, a duel to the death! I dare ya, baldy!"

Base: Joyful Girl (site closed)

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy crew: Arthur, Zaphod, Trillian and Ford. Not based on the TV series or movie, just my perception of them when reading the books. I was given kind permission by Joyful Girl (who is also a fan of the series) to modify her base to accomodate ZB's extra limbs and heads.

Base: Hush

Okay, I admit it. I'm a Ford Prefect freak. One of the reasons why I like Hitchhikers so much is the way Ford is written. He's a man of contradictions: charismatic and admirable, yet a self-centered jerk. He's very laidback, but manic at the same time. Anyway, I've always pictured him in khakis and a grossly miscalculated shirt. And no, I didn't draw the pattern on the shirt.

Dolls Based on Comic Book Characters

Base: Shouri

I could go on for paragraphs trying to justify why I like Sailor Moon, but in the end, I think it's just a really cool fairy tale. In outer space. With sailor suits. There's nothing wrong with that, is there?!

Base: PoppedArtDolls

It's nice to have a small base with which to knock off something really fast. I had a hankering for a Nightcrawler doll, but only 10 minutes before work. Le voila!

Base: Bunnystick

This superkeen base by Bunnystick just begs to be adorned with superheroes. These are a tribute to my comic collecting days waaaybackwhen. Gambit was always a favourite, even though his wardrobe choices were maddening. The jacket? Cool. The pink and black ensemble? Not so much. Which is why I dug up some current pics to base this doll on. (So glad they got rid of that outfit!)

Base: Bunnystick

I was never keen on classic Nightcrawlerwear either, so I chose civvies that kind of reflect the old costume. I tried making the bottom of the pants white to recall the boots, but it looked rather frightening, in a disco-y sort of way.

Base: Bunnystick

Wolverine's civvies were a result of sheer laziness. The hair could use more work, but the claws turned out nicely.

Base: Crystal Dreams (site closed)

The Chainsaw Vigilante from The Tick comic book series. It's a shame he never turned up on the cartoon or live action show, because he is the awesome. Disturbed, but awesome. This is probably the fifth or sixth doll I ever attempted and I'm so proud of the black leather, which I've never been able to duplicate since. *cries*
